Travel ancient avenues of Iowa!
The Iowa Ancient Trails Project
The Ancient Trails project documents pre-settlement roads and trails in the northern half of Iowa. These ancient trails have largely disappeared, replaced by modern county roads and highways. Not all of these early trails are gone, however, and you can still follow several ancient routes as they wind across northern Iowa, traveling the routes used for centuries by Indians, explorers, traders, soldiers, and settlers.
The Archaeological GUIDE TO IOWA
There are more than 27,000 archaeological sites recorded in Iowa. The Archaeological Guide to Iowa highlights selected sites that represent the wide span of history and prehistory across the state.
The Ancient Trails Tours presented here interact with several archaeological sites and historic locations described in the guide.
